As the Chief Information Officer, Dr. Roy Whitney is responsible for providing: information from the Lab's Information Technology (IT) systems to the Lab's management, the overall IT vision, the Information Architecture for computing and IT, and oversight for cyber security. In addition, he is responsible for providing the hardware and software environment for the staff and user Lattice Quantum ChromoDynamics theorists and for providing advanced tools to the Lab from current research and development of grid technologies.

Dr. Whitney was a member of the team that proposed Jefferson Lab and his work at the Lab began with its inception in 1984. He was in the first group of six staff members to be hired at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF). Prior to taking the reins as Chief Information Officer, he was the Associate Director of the Administration Division. Dr. Whitney also served as the leader of the User Liaison Office and manager of the Computer Center. He contributed to the original proposals for CEBAF, planning for the experimental program, construction of the experimental facilities and physics experiments.

Dr. Whitney's experience at federally-funded laboratories spans over 30 years. He has worked at Stanford University's High Energy Physics Lab, Berkeley Lab, Los Alamos-LAMPF, MIT-Bates, as well as Saclay in France.

Prior to joining the Lab, Dr. Whitney received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, and taught physics and conducted research at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Smith College, Springfield Technical Community College and the University of Virginia.
