in Java 1.1 if you have too many free colors, it wedges. there's some
bad code in the JVM that throws it into an infinite loop.
netscape eats up gobs of colors, which is why that workaround is
effective.
fortunately, Java looks at an environment variable which effects
this. 'setenv CMAPSIZE 128' should fix it up.
for the second, i'd need to see the Motif error. Java can have
lots of problems if it can't find the proper fonts. using a font
server often helps.
