I do not have an HMX, but I presume its about the same thing.

Your java interpreter (JVM), whether that be built into a browser or some
other JVM, is running on the Sun server. Where it is running is the key
point. That java interpreter is sending its graphics data out to X-windows
which is then redirecting it to your display... That is the graphics only.
The sound will always be heard (if at all) on the application host, not the
display host. X11 has never really been able to stream sound beyond the
simple beeps used to signal for our attention or annoy us.

However, I believe that X11R6.3 and Broadway (and probably other
implementations by now) contain the new nifty Audio extention to
X11. I've yet to see anything beyond demo's actually take advantage of it,
and I do not know which XTerminals, if any, support that extention. Its
still a fairly new toy.

To summarize,
X11 makes XTerminals work, so the XTerminals can only do what X11 can do
pretty much.
X11 can't stream sound (usually).
The JVM play()/loop() functions send the sound to the application host,
not the remote display.

[this makes for interesting fun when you, on your xterminal hit a web page
[which has background sound and it starts playing on the application host
[in the cube next door, or down the hall, or in another city altogether.

Can someone tell me why I can't use "sound" from
a java program running on a solaris server and
deliver it to an NCD HMX terminal? Works fine on the
Sun but not on the HMX. The Sun still delivers the
sound. Much easier to wheel an NCD into a classroom
than to wheel a Sun. See:

Thanks, Harlan
