I have established a Membership Web Page which lists the
current full and term members, the text of the charter and bylaws
(as compiled by our archivest Jim O'Brien) and other relevant
membership information. The address is
http://www.physics.odu.edu/~dodge/membership.html
At the next collaboration meeting in January '98 the
Membership Committee will consider nominations for new full
members of the CLAS collaboration. At the September '97
meeting the Membership Committee adopted new procedures for
considering new members. The text of the new policy is available
on the web page but the new aspects are listed here:
1. The Membership Committee will now look at the
text of the MOU describing the projects for which the proposed new
member will take responsibility. It is the intention of the committee
that the members of the collaboration have an opportunity to assess
the extent of the proposed activities. Therefore, it is important
that the proposed new member discuss the scope of his/her
MOU with various interested members of the collaboration before
sending the final text to the Membership Committee.
a. Those who are joining an existing CLAS
institution may choose to write an extension of an existing
MOU covering the work of that group. In this case,
the proposed candidate should at least contact Steve Dytman,
Bernhard Mecking and the chair of his/her working group in
drawing up the MOU to get early feedback on the scope
of the project.
b. For those wishing to join as a new institution
or group, early contact with the New Member Subcommittee (NMS) of the
Membership Committee is recommended, as well as with the people
listed above. Those nominees in this category should contact me
for the names of NMS members.
2. After the Membership Committee votes on its recommendation
to the CLAS collaboration, the application for membership, including
the MOU, will be forwarded to the CLAS collaboration for
consideration. The collaboration will vote on the proposed
membership at the following meeting.
Please note that the new policy affects only the procedure
by which the Membership Committee will arrive at its recommendation
to the full collaboration regarding the proposed new member. The
voting procedures by the full collaboration are unchanged.
If you would like to nominate someone for membership,
please fill out the nomination form available on the web at
the address listed above. Send the form, including the text
of the MOU, to me by December 12, 1997. Please note also
that either the nominator or the nominee should be present
at the Membership Committee meeting during the January
collaboration meeting to answer questions regarding the nomination.
If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
