At our weekly EGN meeting last Friday we discussed
the status and future of our group's software effort.
One of the key missing pieces is a central location
to store software and data relevant to the calorimeter
specifically. Right now we have this in our ESC1 disk,
however, that disk cannot be viewed by the central
systems, and you have expressed the wish for us to
move those files to the central fileserver.
I suggested a solution some weeks ago, which you
seemed to accept at the time, namely, to create a
new account named 'egn', with a disk quota equal to
that of the esc1 disk. I believe the password could
actually remain a secret to us; the use of this space
could be controlled by the use of the existing group
'clasesc' which was associated with the ESC1 disk.
Dieter has expressed distaste for this arrangement,
and prefers to wait until you have found an alternate
arrangement within CUE which does not make use of a
separate group and account. The calorimeter group,
however, feels that this is very urgent; we are
continually being hampered by the present situation
of our disk being invisible to the central system.
The people who were involved in this discussion on
Friday were myself, Volker Burkert, Cole Smith, TY
Tung, Alan Coleman, Stepan Stepanyan, Herbert Funsten,
as well as a visiting collaborator from overseas.
This group feels that the system I described above is
adequate and urgently needed.
Please let me know when it will be possible to act
on this request, or provide an alternate proposal.
Thanks very much,
- Will Brooks
